An RV solar power system opens up all kinds of opportunities to camp off the grid, but remember, RV solar power systems rely on energy stored in your batteries which will be replenished by the sun, but has some constraints what you don’t have when you’re plugged into shore power.
When it comes to power in, the variables you’ll want to consider are:
1. How many watts of solar you have on your roof, in other words, how much energy CAN you collect when the sun is out
2. The weather and if you’re in a shady or sunny campsite
3. The size of your battery bank – the more amp hours your batteries can store, the more energy you will can have on-hand.
When you’re boondocking, you’ll also want to think about power usage. You might be surprised how much energy some commonly used appliances can pull out of your battery. Hair dryers, full-sized coffeemakers like Kuerigs, and toaster ovens are just a few things you may want to consider not using when you’re relying on energy from your battery.
We often get asked how long an owner can stay out with one of our SolarFlex packages. As I hope we’ve shown, it can vary. As you begin to camp off-the-grid, use your battery monitoring system to give you a feel for how different things you do around your RV impacts the draw from your battery. This will help you make the best choices depending on how long you’re camping for and if the weather goes sideways.
