Three defendants on trial for robbery and murder have been killed in a shootout at a court in Moscow as they stole guns from security officers in an attempt to escape.

Aram…do we know how the suspects managed to free themselves to attack the guards?

Well Se-min… as of yet we do not know how they were able to break free, but Russia’s Investigative Committee says one of the defendants tried to strangle one of the guards and that is probably when the other two grabbed the officers’ weapons.
There were a total of five suspects, in handcuffs, being escorted by two guards to a court trial on Tuesday and the incident occurred in an elevator inside the courthouse.
When the elevator stopped and opened its doors on the third floor, three of the defendants tried to escape but were shot dead by Russian National Guard officers and the two others were seriously injured.
Three security officers are also said to be hurt and two of them are being treated in hospital.
A lawyer who was inside the building said at least 20 gunshots could be heard.
The defendants are accused of being members of a group known as the Grand Theft Auto Gang, named after the famous video game.
It is comprised of Central Asian nationals and the defendants are accused of killing 17 people between 2012 and 2014, mostly from attempts to steal the victims’ cars.
The incident is likely to raise questions as to how handcuffed suspects entering a courtroom were able to assault security officials and attempt to flee.
